2003 Brother SX-4000 Serial # D3E577373 2003 Brother SX-4000 typewriter, Serial # D3E577373 Chris Eldridge's 2003 Brother SX-4000 typewriter. 2017-05-26 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Chris Eldridge: 2003 Brother SX-4000 Serial # D3E577373 This gray beauty is typewriter #1 in my collection - the machine that started it all for me in late 2016.

Far from what one would think of as a Typewriter worth collecting, I figured it would just be a "fun to use" little machine when I found it at a thrift store for all of $10.

Ribbon for it is cheap and plentiful, and I stocked plenty, but amazingly have barely used this machine - perhaps it's just the fact that it feels so much like a proper computer that it has no charm. Still, it's nice for super-professional looking documents, and I would think if I collected a good font set of daisy wheels I could really take advantage of it fully.

Indeed, the line-by-line "type it then it prints it" design is absolutely awesome, meaning there is no reason to have a typo - even then the machine has correction ribbon options, so really, without going into an outright word processor or just using an actual computer, this is as close as you can get while still being a "typewriter" in core essence.

Oh, hello there!

I'm just a pretty normal guy with the not so normal hobby of vintage technology of all types. Normally I focus on video games and electronics, but ever since the purchase in 2016 of a Brother SX-4000 Electronic Typewriter for 10 dollars, I've slowly delved head-first into the world of Typewriters.

I have machines daring from the 1920's to the 1980's, in varying conditions - only one I would describe as in "not working" condition. I adore these machines for what they are, and the time they represent in human technology. Each machine carries with it a lifetime of history, even if we don't know the details on each machine we own.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother SX-4000 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother SX-4000 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
