Splendid Plastic Paradise
A brief meditation on plastic, or more precisely on the beautifully sculpted, glossy black shell in which the mechanics lie cradled.
While the many Enigma machines the Nazis scuttled into the Baltic Sea at the end of World War II have largely succumbed to saltwater corrosion by now, this Robotron model would probably not reach that state for another six hundred years or so. Considering rising sea levels and the threat of future flooding, that feels like a not entirely negligible advantage. In other words, an unexpectedly optimistic way of looking ahead.
But the real surprise for me was something else. I admit that at first it was purely the appearance that drew me in. Now I know better. This machine is not simply made for the eye; it is, through and through, made for writing.
