1981 Brother Cassette Electric L10 Plus 3 Serial # A11884662 1981 Brother Cassette Electric L10 Plus 3 typewriter, Serial # A11884662 John Reilley's 1981 Brother Cassette Electric L10 Plus 3 typewriter. 2021-06-17 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of John Reilley: 1981 Brother Cassette Electric L10 Plus 3 Serial # A11884662 I almost feel bad for loving this machine as much as I do, it's just so great feeling! Another stellar Goodwill find, though the previous owner clearly made a lot of mistakes, because the internals were a sea of white flakes that had congealed into a goo. That's history now though! These Brother cassettes are a pain, not because they're hard to change out, quite the contrary in fact, but they're out of production, and you simply can't find them on their own online. The saving grace of this system is that the cassettes are simply fancy plastic scaffolding that house traditional typewriter ribbons! So a few minutes later and I had a fresh ribbon running through my single cassette. As long as the mounting points for the two halves of the cassette stay strong, you'll have opportunity for infinite use just like a conventional machine.

A fun side note is that that rectangle to the right of the space is actually a button, and it releases the locks on the ribbon cover, which automatically slides forward like on a Smith Corona Galaxie. The ribbon teeth in the center also hinge open to let you simply drop in a new cassette without having to feed a new ribbon through. It's a fun design and I can see that if you had multiple cassettes on hand and different ribbon colors for each, you could have a blast with multicolor typing while never getting your hands dirty!

I'm a high school English teacher. Whenever I have to teach my students how to format a paper, I unleash a flock of Charger 11's at them! (they love it). I am most interested in the Brother brand, but I dabble in any and all machines.
