197X Smith Corona Secretarial 76 Serial # 76E12-7009874 197X Smith Corona Secretarial 76 typewriter, Serial # 76E12-7009874 Suzanne LaPierre's 197X Smith Corona Secretarial 76 typewriter. 2026-07-17 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Suzanne LaPierre: 197X Smith Corona Secretarial 76 Serial # 76E12-7009874 This Secretarial 76 belonged to a friend's mother who passed away. I named her Clarissa in honor of the original owner, who taught shorthand and other subjects at Oxford High School in Pennsylvania, where she may have acquired this typewriter as surplus when the school upgraded its technology. This machine needs cleaning but seems functional. It is probably the heaviest typewriter I have owned! The serial number can be found under the right side of the carriage. Unique things about this model: it was the last desktop manual typewriter made by Smith Corona; it has a Space-o-matic feature (press the Space-o-matic bar down to get continuous spaces) and a half-space button. I'm not sure how to get an exact year from the serial number, so if anyone knows please enlighten me!

Update: I gave this to a neighbor who wants to restore it for her daughter, so it is no longer in my personal collection.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, and to write snail mail letters. The tactile nature of typing on a manual machine works some kind of detox magic in this digital age. Each vintage typewriter has a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
