197X Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 Serial # 8ELA 198744M 197X Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 typewriter, Serial # 8ELA 198744M James Grooms's 197X Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 typewriter. 2026-04-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 197X Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 Serial # 8ELA 198744M The 'dreaded' Coronamatic marathon continues. If they started at 100000, which would be typical, I put this one c 74-75. A new model for 73 with the 7000. This one has the detachable cord and color scheme for the mid 70s. These were still being sold at least until 1983 when the ads run out. Those are easy to spot with the bright color combos.

Derided because of the cartridge and usually because they are worn out and/or not serviced. There are 100-plus lube points with four different lubricants per the factory manual, but over on reddit, they run them dry and rat 'em out. Then wonder what went wrong.

1. Dial in some belts.
2. Replace the return bump stop and set up properly. There's a lock nut and adjuster there.
3. Dial the escape in. If the rubber silencer is still there, cut it out. This one has a silencer spring.
4. Grease the return gears.
5. Grease the return pinion drive, rack teeth and rack slider pins.
6. Dial up the main spring a bit.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
