1979 Royal (Triumph-Adler) Satellite 2001 Serial # 6865597 1979 Royal (Triumph-Adler) Satellite 2001 typewriter, Serial # 6865597 James Grooms's 1979 Royal (Triumph-Adler) Satellite 2001 typewriter. 2025-11-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1979 Royal (Triumph-Adler) Satellite 2001 Serial # 6865597 A TWDB first. The Satellite's last gasp with ads from 79-80.

A super clean machine. The return clutch needs attention. Let's see if it turns out better than the last Adler.
--------------------------------
A well used machine that was serviced before it was retired. A good example of the decline in quality of the typebar era. From the Adler era, it has been cheapened with a lot of plastic. The aluminum body is now all plastic. The plastic ribbon lift detent, for example, which was broken with an attempt to glue it back together. The fan with no set screw that was freewheeling. Overall, just dumbed down to save money.

This case here is repurposed from the Adler machine. I don't think by 79 they still sold them with a case.

I pulled the metal ribbon detent out of my dead Adler along with the tension spring for the return strap, which was all mangled. The clutch is on the last leg, so return is slow. A bit of tweaking to the lever took out some of the wear freeplay.

------------------------------
The use of 2001? Early on they market these as both the Satellite and in other places Satellite 2001. The blue shells and off white keys. Once TA takes over they are all 2001s and have the black keys that look like an electronic machine.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal (Triumph-Adler) Satellite 2001 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal (Triumph-Adler) Serial Number page and the Royal (Triumph-Adler) Satellite 2001 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
