Description:
Brother JP-4 for Kmart. A 612 for Remington and an 812 for MW. These were late 69 machines. There's no MW catalog for 69, but they are a feature machine in the 70 catalog.
They are solid builds like the JP-2. Why don't you see more of them? I have a theory as to why this is, because they sold well across the three brand names. They develop a loud whine from the power roller. There is a carrier plate on the left side and a carrier bearing on the right side. The noise is not from the motor or the reduction gear. I removed the carrier plate from this one, then cleaned it and the shaft. I let the shift assembly soak in PBB overnight and put it back together. I set some slack in the preload for the gear and shift assembly. It still howls. It could be that the bearing on the RS is transmitting noise through the roller shaft, but I am not taking the power roller out! 2 of 4 machines have this issue. There are a couple of vids on YT and some of those have the whine as well. Compared to a quiet 611, the drag on the power shaft doesn't feel any heavier when rolling over by hand.
If you took one of these in for repair, you'd skip it once you knew what it would cost to take the power roller apart. It would be far more than what the machine cost new. So I believe these went into the dumpster and that is why you don't see them around much.
This one saw some use. The feet are worn down. The case is beat up. Something was dropped on the keys and broke seven of them, and the 7 key was missing. Some black hot glue and a key from a JP-2 did the trick. The 7 key is a bit different, but a little time with a file and it works.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Wedgefield (Brother) Electric 1000 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Wedgefield (Brother) Serial Number page and the Wedgefield (Brother) Electric 1000 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
