1970 Olympia SM9 Serial # 4000355 1970 Olympia SM9 typewriter, Serial # 4000355 Daniel Burgoyne's 1970 Olympia SM9 typewriter. 2026-02-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Daniel Burgoyne: 1970 Olympia SM9 Serial # 4000355 Magnificent machine with a wide carriage. The platen is actually 335 mm wide (13.5"), which is wider than the one on my SG 1!

This is Elite typeface No. 8 and 87. Pitch of 2.3 mm per caracter.

This was found in the City of Québec, was packed carefully and shipped by bus to me by collector friend Florence C.

The seller, Lirette Dactylo, was founded in 1965 on boulevard de l'Ormière, in Neufchâtel, a suburb of Québec. It is still in business, but no longer sells typewriters. Like many others such businesses.

I really like the more advanced active paper bail system on this carriage, it is essentially the same as what Royal had been doing for decades. Thanks for catching up, Olympia!

The paper release lever also pushes the paper bail away from the platen, rather that lifting it. It makes it easier to thread in new paper, without touching the paper bail rollers.

That being said, Royal and the other US makers tool a loong time to catch up to Europeans on 1-1/2 line spacing...

Bonjour! I am from the region of Montreal, Quebec and moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992.

Amateur watchmaker and machinist, I love anything mechanical, hydraulic or electric. I have restored American and Canadian clocks and small lathes, milling machines and a jig bore.

Most of my typewriters have French Canadian QWERTY keyboards, with some exception for rare finds.
