1969 Olympia SM9 Serial # 3918576 1969 Olympia SM9 typewriter, Serial # 3918576 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1969 Olympia SM9 typewriter. 2026-07-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1969 Olympia SM9 Serial # 3918576 An Olympia SM9

This is a 1969 model, which has a more gray cast to the white body shell. It's still the later body style, but the later models have a more brighter white.

This is now my 5th SM9, towards my goal of 9 SM9s, all with different typefaces. This one has plain old Pica. Some slugs have the #97 code which according to the source I saw denotes Pica for portables, but some slugs had #12, which is the normal Pica slug code. A mystery.

This one is in pretty good shape. It had the usual bent part on the cover hinge, which I bent back into shape. I was afraid of some damage during the shipping as the outer box looked like it took some hits, but the case seems to have protected it. I think I will refuse to buy and have shipped any portables without their cases, as they often get damaged in shipping.

I'm happy to find another SM9 with a typeface I did not have. It is going to become more and more difficult to find typefaces #6-#9...

Another Goodwill Auction acquisition. This typewriter was sent from Columbus, Ohio.

Note most of the slugs have the #97 code for Pica on portables, but some have the #12 code which should be the code for Pica on non-portables.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
