Turns out it's the later. On both machines I can type fast enough that the spacebar doesn't register. But that just means you have to go a little slower is all. These are decent machines, and for a backpack nothing is smaller or lighter! All I and to do was clean it up and replace the rubber washers for the ribbon cover mount.

Sold to a friend who I hope and suspect will get a lot of enjoyment from it!
