1965 Hermes Rocket Serial # 6106553 1965 Hermes Rocket typewriter, Serial # 6106553 Elisa Makoon-Singh's 1965 Hermes Rocket typewriter. 2025-06-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Elisa Makoon-Singh: 1965 Hermes Rocket Serial # 6106553 Stylish portable with Spanish diacritics.

This machine was 60 years old when it came into my collection in June 2025, and it’s definitely seen a lot of use over the years. The case has some dents from having done its job - the machine itself is surprisingly intact.

The main issue is that both platen knobs are cracked—apparently a common problem with this model. Luckily, I ordered an *original* left knob from a gentleman in Switzerland. For the right knob... there are some 3D-printed replacements on eBay that look like an easy fix. All of the rubber bits were dried up and I have new rubber feet on order.

It’s a cute, sturdy little thing—definitely portable, and it has that kind of charm that comes with age and use. It does need some servicing; the carriage shift makes a metal clacky sound that doesn’t seem quite right (it does explain the rolled up paper I extracted from the machine, which was probably inserted as a sound dampener). With some TLC, it’ll be a solid typer.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
