1965 Brother JP-3 Serial # D5693285 1965 Brother JP-3 typewriter, Serial # D5693285 Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp's 1965 Brother JP-3 typewriter. 2021-09-06 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp: 1965 Brother JP-3 Serial # D5693285 Feeeww! It was exiting to determine the year of production for this one, but I hope I made it right. Thanks to Mr. Munk (and others?) for the roadmap! ItĀ“s fun when creating a gallery starts with a little game :-)

What should I say about this Brother JP-3? It is big, it is blue, I donĀ“t know if JP-3 is the modell name or that of the basis, and it arrived pretty broken at my home.
I bought this "Brother" mainly cause of its awesomely styled hood. As said in the description for the serial numbers, the JP-3 is a relatively rare Typer (probably cause its not the best one), and to find it with this beautiful striped frontcover seems to me even more difficult. I havenĀ“t seen one since.

But what do you do, when the Typer you eagerly wait for, comes broken onto your doorstep? No question, I tried my best to repair it, and it happens to work out mostly to my satisfaction.

The poor thing was lying in a cardboardbox, a loosely upholstery film waving around it. ItĀ“s carriage had dangled freely in the vast wideness of the oversized box. One platen knob was bended upwards like a hook, the other pushed from its metall well, so that it dangled too. Things were bend, drawband jumped off and what not. A truly disapointing sight, and something I needed while, before I decided to encounter the challenge.

Before that I wrote the girl who sold it, but the silly thing really lived in the believe that she packed it safely. ( I asked her before to take care for) I didnĀ“t wasted more time and nerve with arguing to save it for the repairs instead.

Today the "Brother" opperates again, but the Type "Y" had stucked repeatingly, without any obvious reason. Even after several times of flushing and oiling the whole lever mechanism it didnĀ“t worked as it should, so I installed a stronger spring. Now it works, but you really have to muscle up your pinky finger.
Cause of the bended left platen knob, I had to straighten itĀ“s short well with patience. Every misalignement can be seen when turning the platen, and so it was quite a challenge. It felt also, that the whole platen is not turning as easy as it should, cause of the well that is not turning perfect anymore. But I did my best, it works good enough, and I have no comparison anyway.
