Description:
Always ask the clerks at thrift stores about how often they get typewriters in. Often part of the answer is "oh, I think I have one up in the attic", and you can convince them to bring it in for you to look at. $10 from a clerk down the street, this Sterling is pretty much the last gasp of the Super-5 Series, and has all the bells & whistles of the Silent Super, plus the typing feel and sound of the earliest Galaxies, all bundled up under the normally bottom-of-the-line "Sterling" model name.

I am a scoundrel without a cause, and my swank outshines the sun.
I am a casual Typewriter Hunter residing in some liminal transitional spacetime between my lifetime in Arizona to the New World of PROBABLY Conneticut with a wife, two cats and about 50 typewriters. My main hunting ground is thrift stores, and I rarely pay more than $10 for a machine. My collection consists mainly of portables with cases, and they stay in the cases unless I am actively using it (usually more than one at a time). I do, however keep a handful of interesting Selectrics, including a Composer.
(frankly, I'm not going to change my avatar background because CT's flag is lame.)
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Sterling on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Sterling By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
