1964 Olympia SG3 Serial # 7-1182709 1964 Olympia SG3 typewriter, Serial # 7-1182709 GK Mandigo's 1964 Olympia SG3 typewriter. 2025-09-01 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of GK Mandigo: 1964 Olympia SG3 Serial # 7-1182709 Nickname: "Greta"
I came by Greta by way of an online thrift store auction. The machine was advertised as a Smith-Corona Skyriter but the pictures clearly showed an Olympia SG3. It appears that when it was donated, it arrived with an owners manual for a Skyriter and whoever processed it for the thrift store did not bother to notice that it was an Olympia, not a Smith-Corona. The thrift store even took pictures of every page of the owners manual, which showed many images of a completely different typewriter, but they still did not put it together. I was the only bidder in the auction so bought an SG3 for a Skyriter price. I even have a free, extra owners manual for a Skyriter.
Greta lived her working life with the State of California and still has their inventory badge on her side and number scribbled in permanent marker on the back. Greta has one of the cleaner-looking 12 cpi Elite typefaces that I have seen and the typing action is velvety smooth. It even is quieter than my other Olympias, it does not suffer from the loud pinging that often plagues the SGs and the SMs. Greta is easily an all-day typer, more proof that Olympia engineering is top-notch.

My machines range from 1947 to 1969 and I type on all of them and have given each of them a name. Have I mentioned that life is short? I am having great fun with this obsessi- I mean hobby.
