1963 Royal Safari Serial # SA5499118 1963 Royal Safari typewriter, Serial # SA5499118 David Karoly's 1963 Royal Safari typewriter. 2024-01-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of David Karoly: 1963 Royal Safari Serial # SA5499118 Acquired this for $15 at the same time and seller as an Olivetti Lettera DL. Missing its ribbon cover. Feel is a bit stiff, not nearly as nice as the 1950s Quiet De Luxe. Feel is a bit like pushing on a bed spring. It types fine, no sticky keys or any other problems. The automatic ribbon reverse is not the best design I usually help it. Maybe that is the reason the ribbon cover is missing and in addition these are known for having problems with the type slugs hitting the cover. It drives ther ribbon very fast; maybe Royal was trying to sell more ribbons.

The only two things fixed were 1) cleaning the margin rack which requires removing the rear cover from the carriage; not as easy as it should be and 2) the right knob shaft was bent, straightened it as much as possible using my Mark One hand, to the point where it no longer is a problem.

A lot of Magic stuff on this machine. Margic margins (this is debatable), Magic column set, oddly the column clear is not magic, columns-not sure if there's magic there or not, magic meter is the big plastic card guide which is useful for centering text.

This one reeked of cigarette smoke (all my others don't smell bad). Chemical flushing reduced that quite a bit.

I started with 2 Monroe calculating machines then in January 2023 I used my Christmas money to buy a 1936 L.C. Smith and Corona, Corona Standard portable. Since then have acquired more typewriters. Also have 2 Engineers Transits (surveying instruments), a K+E Foresters staff compass, and 4 slide rules. Typewriters as a hobby has been more affordable than antique surveying instruments anre and they are easier to obtain.
