1963 Royal Empress Serial # MCE 11-7772114 1963 Royal Empress typewriter, Serial # MCE 11-7772114 Brent Wegher's 1963 Royal Empress typewriter. 2026-03-14 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brent Wegher: 1963 Royal Empress Serial # MCE 11-7772114 Local sale. Good working condition likely due to the presence of an original vinyl cover. No rust, must have been stored in dry place.
Just dusted out with compressed air, and some cotton swabs in key areas. No problems typing, but sprayed solvent into segment. All functions test fine.
Tabulator works fine, impressions are clean and sharp.
Platen and rollers look very good, but not like new.
Measured platen rubber width at exactly 10 and 1/2 inches.
An old repair likely replaced the hinge bolt of the return lever, It works fine, but there is no spring-back when the lever is used.
Might be possible to add a spring there, will look at it later.
This example does not have the Royal logo on back, just the ribbon cover.
Some minor scuffs on back.
The foam noise insulation under the magic margin cover has turned to dust, that fell onto the margin rack.
Removing the dust restored the magic margin functionality to excellent condition.
Typing feels very good with touch control on the "2" position.
Ribbon advances fine, the installed ribbon still has light ink, but part of one end of the ribbon has lost all ink.
Original Royal metal spools work fine.
This machine needed a little exercise but now excellent typer.
The original feet look good, a little harder than I'd prefer.
It would be nice to have the more modern key layout with a number "1"
Some photos taken with ribbon cover removed. Photos taken under artificial light, so color rendition may be faulty, but the paint is just neutral gray.
This was a very lucky find.

Typing down thoughts, prefer that to handwriting.
Not really a collector, just like to tinker on mechanical things.
