1962 Torpedo 18b Serial # 1268224 1962 Torpedo 18b typewriter, Serial # 1268224 Liz Glenn's 1962 Torpedo 18b typewriter. 2021-12-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Liz Glenn: 1962 Torpedo 18b Serial # 1268224 "Storm"

Darn the Torpedo! This is my absolute favorite manual typewriter in my collection. It has been completely restored with a brand new platen & feed rollers from J.J. Short and Associates in New York and has a new set of 3d printed feet from Septimus Clark in addition to a deep cleaning done by Duane Jensen (Phoenix Typewriter). It is also sporting a brand new bichrome black/red silk ribbon, which is eyelet/grommet free, on DIN 2103 (6N070) metal spools from Ribbons Unlimited. The ribbon reverse system does not need ribbon eyelets/grommets because it is tensioned based.

I found this gem in the wild online universe in April 2021. I quickly sent this to Duane for the necessary repairs it would need. I knew this neglected machine was used and abused. Its platen was "hard and scarred" with it many dimples and it had rotten/crumbling feet. The internals were sprayed with oil, which was not friendly, and thus made the basket/segment sticky over time. I knew it needed a lot of TLC to get going again.

I am in LOVE with this beautiful but yet very precise German typewriter.....It FLIES like the WIND!

Just a "Typewriter Nut". I like collecting technologies from the past such as typewriters especially the ones with special/rare typefaces. There's just something about learning how things were made (& worked) back in the day!

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Torpedo 18b on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Torpedo Serial Number page and the Torpedo 18b By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
