Description:
The first fully electric portable, the "Compact 200'"(see ad) and the successor to the 5TE Electric Portable. A historic machine in typewriter development that is largely overlooked. This basic configuration would be around twenty-five plus years until the mid 80s. On this foundation, S-C would dominate the affordable office category and sell millions of them. Spinoffs in a multitude of options would also rule the consumer market, while everyone else, except IBM, went belly up. A prosumer product, before the phrase was coined. By 1974, they had sold 2 million versions of them. Initially, only Brother had anything to compete with it, and they didn't have the name recognition or dealer network. Olivetti builds the unreliable Praxis 48 in response. Remington quits and licenses Brother machines. Royal never had a good option. Eventually, Olympia will, and the Hermes 10 was pretty solid.
This particular example saw some use. There's an ID number engraved into the top cover. The motor is loud, as are the return gears. Some mismatched and bummed up screws are evidence of questionable service work. The carriage side covers were broken. However, the typebars are straight and the slugs aren't chipped or scored.
I am paying attention to escapements, and here is another one that has a silencer return spring on it.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona 200 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona 200 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
