1962 R.C. Allen Visomatic A Serial # A-2257499-16 1962 R.C. Allen Visomatic A typewriter, Serial # A-2257499-16 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1962 R.C. Allen Visomatic A typewriter. 2026-07-06 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1962 R.C. Allen Visomatic A Serial # A-2257499-16 An R.C. Allen VisOmatic, A series.

Did not know these existed until I saw the Facebook Marketplace ad. Looked interesting, and at a fair price locally. Took a while to actually link up with the seller, but I eventually made the purchase.

Did not know until I got home to test it that it had Pica Italic typeface! I was hoping for an interesting typeface. I had been looking for some sort of italic typewriter, so I was especially pleased.

The VisOMatics use a proprietary ribbon spool that seems similar but different to the Remington system. I must remember to never let these spools go.

The slugs are RaRo #64. The german language catalog I looked at called it Pica-Cursive, but in German. The 1967 WOMDA listing for R.C. Allen typefaces show that this is what they call Pica Italic.

The typewriter is overall in fair shape. There are some rust spots and paint dings, but overall it's held together.

They key caps remind me of the Remington QuietRiter key caps. The overall typing feel is not remarkable, not bad, not particularly good.

This has some weird features. The margin setting is just like the Royal Magic Margin system, but this works better than the one on my KMM. There are controls on the front to adjust the card guide - the left half and the right half are adjustable individually. Not sure what purpose that serves.

Comparison to some of the other Visomatic A's in the database show a much simpler ribbon guide compared to other 1962 VisOmatics.

I thought I scrubbed the slugs, but the closeup shows theres much more crud to remove.

I look forward to polishing this up.

Can't quite make out the decal. Normally I leave old decals as they are, but this one is already mostly removed, so I'll probably remove the rest of it.

The feet are in remarkably good condition.

The ribbon guide (where the ribbon threads just outide the spools) and the spool holder seems much less complicated compared to other 1962 VisOmatic A's in the database.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the R.C. Allen Visomatic A on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the R.C. Allen Serial Number page and the R.C.
