1962 Olympia SG1 Serial # 7-843196 1962 Olympia SG1 typewriter, Serial # 7-843196 Cole Ehmke's 1962 Olympia SG1 typewriter. 2024-01-12 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Cole Ehmke: 1962 Olympia SG1 Serial # 7-843196 The touch was excellent and it operated without issue. Typed smoothly. It had serif font with 11 pitch (11 characters per inch) -- a very nice size. It was well used but showed very little signs of age. I love that SG1s are extremely well designed and meticulously built. The full functionality is remarkable. In addition to features common on other typewriters the SG1's ribbon lift has four settings (top (black), bottom (red, if using a bichrome ribbon), plus middle and stencil) which allow you to get the very most from a ribbon. Plus the carriage is easily removable (no disassembly needed), there is a setting for automatic spacing, and it comes with a paper injector (the paper feed lever inserts every sheet of paper to the same height (it can be set from 3 to 18 line spaces)). In addition:
-the key tops are spring cushioned
-it has an automatic tab clearance lever
-there is half spacing
-it is easy to set margin stops and tabs.

It also has line spacing settings of 1.5 and triple which don't appear on other machines. And the keyboard has numerous special characters such as the "th" superscript, degree, circumflex and half fraction. In short, it is an astounding typewriter that is a pleasure to use.
