1962 Imperial Good Companion 6 Serial # 6 U 893 1962 Imperial Good Companion 6 typewriter, Serial # 6 U 893 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1962 Imperial Good Companion 6 typewriter. 2015-12-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1962 Imperial Good Companion 6 Serial # 6 U 893 It´s always nice to catch a fully working typewriter. Just open the mail parcel and it´s ready to go. Sadly, more often than not it happens the opposite.

But not with this one. This was being sold with a little tag on it, typed by itself, which read "Hello, I work perfectly", and it was extremely true. With a good price on it, I could not resist. So far, my experience with Imperials has been very satisfactory, and this one follows the tradition. Works incredibly well for a neglected typewriter. The ribbon is alive and kicking, the touch is very responsive and it can be a great all-rounder. Good Companion, yes. I should highlight the GOOD part indeed.

It features several mechanical quirks that make it even cooler: the cog-like union at the typebars (the same as in the Hispano Studio 46), the extremely low profile of the carriage which forces you to tipe in a correct position (that is, on a lower table where you can put your arms at a 90º angle) and the overwhelming amount of fractions at the keyboard (typical of English machinery). Oh, and the beautiful asterisk it brings.

So far, these last two months (Nov-Dec 2015) have been outstanding in terms of typweriters for me. Now I only need a little vacation (a good Christmas) to finish the year.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
