My first typewriter. Bought for $20 in an estate sale in Los Angeles County (San Gabriel Valley) over ten years ago. It initially had some little paper labels for records and a typewriter brush. Unfortunately, I lost track of these little items that it first came with during the course of using it both for personal use and using it for work purposes.

The typewriter itself was found in excellent condition except for the line spacing switch which continues to be loose and perpetually set at double space. Its rubber feet are dry though and the Futura often needs some assistance in staying stuck on a table top as it tends to slide around during use. The case is a little rough as well but continues to hold the typewriter securely when not being used.

It's been my baseline typing experience as it was my only typewriter until 2026. In hindsight, it's okay in regards to the typing action that it provides. Although, this Futura is sturdy and solid in appearance, typing on its thick plastic keys feels a little clunky - even at the lowest setting. Regardless, this Futura is the foundation of my collection and will continue to be my number one typewriter.

Amateur typewriter hunter and ASW with a small collection of typewriters here in Southern California. My modest collection began around 2014 when I bought a Royal Futura 800 at an estate sale with the measly $20 I had in my pocket.

Seeing the dazzling Americana Futura 800 for the first time paled in comparison to my earliest memories of an electric Brother typewriter that my mom practiced on in the late 90s. I'm forever thankful to the lady that let me buy my first typewriter, the Futura 800, as it has sparked my interest in mid century typewriters. For the time being, I've found a warm sense of comfort in using my typewriters for journaling and letting some clients in my work use it so that they can experience the unique joy of using a typewriter for themselves.

If I find a typewriter in the wild, I'll certainly record and upload it here. In that regard, at least these machines can be saved in a small way for both new and old typewriter enthusiasts.
