1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE223945 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter, Serial # 5TE223945 James Grooms's 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter. 2026-02-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1960 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE223945 Another great 5TE survivor. This one is near the end of the 5 series. I also have (had) the first one, so go figure that (link). No case and doesn't appear to have been in one, as the tell-tale scratches are not present. No belt thump. How this thing was hermetically stored is a mystery.

"No 66 elite." 12 cpi. There is a no 66 "elite Pica" just to confuse things.
------------------------------------------------------------
As is often the case when they are so unused, there is something amiss. A reason they were parked for another day that never came. The pivot screw for the ribbon advance, up by the selector switch, was gone. So it would only lift the ribbon just a tad and inconsistently. A Coronet parts machine, that uses a pivot post with an e-clip for this, gave up the shoulder screw for the pulley pivot mechanism. With a long thin driver and some careful consideration to the angle of approach , it was an easy fix once I figured it out.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Electric Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Electric Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
