This VariTyper 610 F (the metal badge on the machine does have the "F" suffix) was kindly given to me. It didn't come with any accessories (empty drawer!), but I already have a decent amount of VariTyper shuttles.
The "F" suffix, it turns out, stands for "Forms". From the manual, under "FORMS CONTROL LEVER": "On the right side of DSJF Vari-Typers is a forms control box and control lever. When this lever is pushed to the left, the hammer strikes the segment in rapid, consecutive strokes, creating a continuous line of rules or leaders, depending on the segment being used. When the lever is pushed to the right a single segment stroke is produced. On each segment stroke the carriage moves 3 increments."
The carriage was completely stuck. I realized that the carriage was skewed and was partly out of the long way rod in the middle of the machine. I managed to push it back and now the carriage moves, although it's a little wobbly.
This might be from the mid-to-late 1950s or early 1960s. We don't have an exact list of serials for these machines.
The machine doesn't quite work yet but the plan is to make it work again!

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1890s to the 1980s. As of 2020, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, and a few standard electrics.
