I bought it from a private seller in Essen for €20. It was his father‘s but he had never had an interest in it and was moving, so he wanted to give it into good hands. Getting it was also a nice trip as we went to the Baldeneysee afterwards, which is gorgeous.

When I got this, it was really dirty and rusty on the outside. I managed to clean it properly, even most of the rust is gone. Now it works quite well, nearly as good as the Silent-Super and a wee bit better than the Clipper from the same year. All in all, it is a really great typewriter, like all 5 series Smith-Coronas. I assume that the typeface got damaged some time in the past and replaced with a cream coloured 5 series typebar.

Like the Silent-Super and the Clipper, it has the Ro88 Bruxelles typeface. Is this a coincidence or were Smith-Coronas produced in Belgium mainly fitted with this typeface?

This is my Smith-Corona Sterling from 1959. I bought it from a private seller in Essen for €20. I'm a typewriter collector from the West of Germany (living in Wuppertal) and I am interested in various kinds of brands and types from pre- and post-WW2, particularly focusing on Seidel & Naumann (Ideal & Erika), Triumph-Adler and Smith-Corona (my favourite brand!), although I own some other brands and am looking at some others (Underwood, Remington). I particularly like portables, my favourite pre-WW2 typewriter being the Erika 5 and my favourite post-WW2 typewriter being my Smith-Corona Silent-Super. However, I most often turn to my Hermes Baby from the 1950s when travelling.

I got into this mess (i.e. collecting typewriters) when I got an Ideal DZ33 in mid-2020. It arrived damaged, which made me sad. To cheer me up I got an Erika 5 after that and then I couldn’t stop. As of July 2026 I own 30 complete typewriters, 1 in parts (an Oliver) and gave away 3 typewriters.
