1959 Olympia SM4 Serial # 1497319 1959 Olympia SM4 typewriter, Serial # 1497319 Mighty Jabba's 1959 Olympia SM4 typewriter. 2023-04-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mighty Jabba: 1959 Olympia SM4 Serial # 1497319 This Olympia SM4 is easily the machine that is in the best condition in my collection. If you had told me this was a new old stock machine, I might have believed you. Aside from the hard platen, it is basically in perfect shape. The case on the other hand was a horror show (nearly falling apart and with spots of what appeared to be mold). It makes me wonder if it was just an unrelated case that the seller married with this machine. In any case, I was very happy considering that I paid what I thought was a very reasonable price. I'm not generally a fan of crinkle paint, but it looks fantastic on this machine -- especially combined with the chrome accents.

This is my first and only Olympia, and I had heard that they are stiffer than many other machines. My experience bears that out -- no matter what I choose for the touch selector, it requires a bit more force than I'm used to in order to make a good impression. I suppose I would get used to it if I was using this all the time, but so far it has made this the kind of machine I like to look at more than actually use.

I'm relatively new to typewriter collecting, but am rapidly making up for lost time...
