1958 Olympia SM3 Serial # 1144489 1958 Olympia SM3 typewriter, Serial # 1144489 GK Mandigo's 1958 Olympia SM3 typewriter. 2025-06-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of GK Mandigo: 1958 Olympia SM3 Serial # 1144489 Nickname "Otto"
Purchased on Etsy. Currently my favorite machine. Every positive thing that is said about Olympia machines is true, the precision construction and great typing action on this machine is top notch. This is a Pica 10-pitch machine which has become my preferred typeface as my aging eyes struggle a bit to read Elite. When I received this machine the backspace key had broken which locked up the carriage requiring a repair by the famous San Diego typewriter whisperer, Mitchell Vassiliou. I like to service my typewriters myself, but when something is more that I can handle, Mitchell is the person I turn to. My one and only criticism of this machine is that it is very loud with a high, pingy sound that reminds one of a crowded newsroom.. I added felt panels to the inside of the body panels to reduce the sound level from “jackhammer†to merely “firearms shooting range.†Still a great machine.

Metastatic cancer fighter and sudden cardiac arrest survivor who has gotten into vintage typewriter collecting after realizing that life is short and typewriters are fascinating. My machines range from 1947 to 1969 and I type on all of them and have given each of them a name. Have I mentioned that life is short? I am having great fun with this obsessi- I mean hobby. I live in San Diego, California.
