1955 Hermes 2000 Serial # 2114540 1955 Hermes 2000 typewriter, Serial # 2114540 Wayne Bouchard's 1955 Hermes 2000 typewriter. 2025-10-16 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Wayne Bouchard: 1955 Hermes 2000 Serial # 2114540 From 1955, here is a Hermes 2000 typewriter. The 2000 was a long lived design, being manufactured in different revisions from 1933-1960 before being replaced by the 3000 in 1958. This particular typewriter has Director Pica typeface, as was pretty typical for the era and is a nice, pleasant typeface to read. This is a portable typewriter, but it is a very large portable, not too far short of a standard typewriter. That makes it a bit more sturdy than typical portables and allows it to tolerate more aggressive use. Mot people quite like this typewriter and I do enjoy how it types, however the stubby, short carriage return lever makes the typing experience decidedly less pleasant than it ought to be, and I think that was the big mistake of this typewriter design. Still, it was quite successful and very well engineered, although not the most friendly for service.

One interesting (and frustrating) aspect of this typewriter is that it adopted a Royal style margin system, where the margins are set by spring pressure against the position of the carriage, not by specific placement of the margins. If you are not used to the typewriter, you can often hit the wrong control when you intend to either release the paper or the carriage and end up upsetting the margin position. With Royal, at least, the margin keys are clearly marked as "Magic Margin" in red letters, so it is easier to avoid throwing the wrong lever by mistake.
