1953 VariTyper DSJ, Third Electric Model Serial # 4767 DSJ 1953 VariTyper DSJ, Third Electric Model typewriter, Serial # 4767 DSJ Ted Munk's 1953 VariTyper DSJ, Third Electric Model typewriter. 2023-09-07 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Ted Munk: 1953 VariTyper DSJ, Third Electric Model Serial # 4767 DSJ Looks like a happy little fellow, doesn't he? A Coxhead DSJ (Forms) model VariTyper. It'll type in 4 monospaced pitches and a half-dozen proportionally spaced point sizes, all *mechanically*. Yeah, that motor in the back just turns on intermittently to add tension to the spring drum that powers the hammer. Everything else is mechanical. It has an escapement shaft festooned with a dozen sandwiched gears that is currently frozen solid from 60 years of congealed lubricants solidifying into impossibly delicately machined crevasses. Hey, at least I got the type tower to work. This will be undergoing extensive chemical cleaning... and then hopefully it'll work. :D

All the motor is used for is there's a spring-clutch axle running from the motor to the spring drum on the opposite side. About every 19 characters typed, the spring drum is desprung enough that it triggers a switch that turns on the motor, which springs into action to wind the spring again, and then it shuts off. That's it. That's all it does.

I am a scoundrel without a cause, and my swank outshines the sun.

I am a casual Typewriter Hunter residing in the sweltering deserts of Arizona with a wife, three cats and about 50 typewriters. My main hunting ground is thrift stores, and I rarely pay more than $10 for a machine. My collection consists mainly of portables with cases, and they stay in the cases unless I am actively using it (usually more than one at a time). I do, however keep a handful of interesting Selectrics, including a Composer and a couple of large Nakajima Electronics to use as daisywheel printers for my vintage laptop collection.
