1953 Olivetti Lettera 22 Serial # 115793 1953 Olivetti Lettera 22 typewriter, Serial # 115793 Francesco Menara's 1953 Olivetti Lettera 22 typewriter. 2022-11-24 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Francesco Menara: 1953 Olivetti Lettera 22 Serial # 115793 I found this mk. I Lettera 22 LL (version with glossy paint and tabulator, while the base L had matt paint and no tab) in a local thrift store; it was on sale at a low price because the two nuts that hold the ribbon coils were missing, but the mechanics were fully working. I didn’t have any problem to find two spare nuts on eBay so that I could mount a new ribbon. The machine is not more dirty than other Letteras 22 I found during my career, except for a lor of powder that comes from those round erasers that were once very common; anyway, it will be cleaned. The quite curious Imperial Eletto (Elite) typeface seems to be a special one on first sight, but I’ve found that, according to an internal letter addressed to Olivetti engineers and managers, it was the default one, and customers had to make a specific request if they wanted the regular Eletto or the bigger Pica. This one has a pitch of 12 cpi, which I prefer, because it allows to save paper and to reduce carriage returns during ten-fingers typing. The presence of its original cloth and leather case, in good condition with working zip fasteners (first time I don’t see a case with broken zips!), is remarkable, because most mk. I Lettera 22 weren’t sold with a case worthy of its name, but only with their cardboard one that was barely better than a box. The paint is in really good conditions. A pair of scratches have been covered by the previous owner with a paintbrush, not a really accurate work.
