Description:
Nickname "Diego"
Note - this gallery and typeface specimen were taken before performing the initial service. I will redo the typeface specimen sample once it has been serviced.
This machine lived its working life at the County of San Diego and still has the County inventory badge riveted to the body. It was sold at auction for $40. This is an Elite 12 cpi, has the grey crinkle paint finish and a wide 12" carriage allowing typing on standard US paper loaded sideways. The 2A prefix on the serial number indicates that it is a 2-series Standard. 1950 was the last year for the Super-Speed which began production in April 1937. The serial number indicates that it was among the 40,000 last Super-Speeds to be built, Smith-Corona built just over 1 million machines of this model. Like many other Smith-Corona typewriters manufactured during 1949-1951, the brand badge on the front of the machine is a brushed metal embossment and not paint or plastic. There is nothing broken on the machine but the action is still stiff. A good flush and service will most certainly loosen everything up nicely. Diego is built like and looks like one of the warships out at nearby Naval Base San Diego.

Metastatic cancer fighter and sudden cardiac arrest survivor who has gotten into vintage typewriter collecting after realizing that life is short and typewriters are fascinating. My machines range from 1947 to 1969 and I type on all of them and have given each of them a name. Have I mentioned that life is short? I am having great fun with this obsessi- I mean hobby. I live in San Diego, California.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Super Speed on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Super Speed By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
