Description:
I picked up a lot of 6 machines just to get one beautiful turquoise QDL, but the seller said at the last minute "I found one more!" He gave me this one and I drove off with 7 machines: 5 of them typewriters, 2 of them manuals! When I saw this was an Underwood Leader I was thrilled because I tried one at a type-in and thought it had a great snappy touch. It's basic - only one ribbon color, no fancy margin settings- but I don't mind. I like the shape of it with the dual black and gray color combo. Since it only takes one color, I put in a pink ribbon that had been gifted to me. I thought it would make a funny contrast to the serious exterior. I plan to give it a better cleaning and take better photos later. Serial number inside under left ribbon spool spindle.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, art, and to write snail mail letters. I find the tactile nature of typing on a manual machine soothing and joyful. Each typewriter seems to have a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Leader on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Leader By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
