1949 Underwood Champion Serial # G1809235 1949 Underwood Champion typewriter, Serial # G1809235 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1949 Underwood Champion typewriter. 2026-05-24 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1949 Underwood Champion Serial # G1809235 A kind of beat-up example of a 1949 Underwood Champion.

Busted paper table, missing margin release system. Rubber feet on their way out. Case is coming apart. I am going to glue the case, but I'm not sure if this one is worth trying to piece back together, or if it's better as a parts donor machine. However, it does type.

Another Goodwill purchase, shipped from Central Texas.

The Underwood portables of this era used this system to affix the typewriter to the case. The rear claws hook over the rear feet area, and the posts fit into the holes in the front feet. It relies on friction to stay, but once the lid is closed, the typewriter is not able to come off the posts.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.

Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Champion on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Champion By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
