1949 Underwood Champion Serial # G1969559 1949 Underwood Champion typewriter, Serial # G1969559 Zachary Thompson's 1949 Underwood Champion typewriter. 2021-08-08 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Zachary Thompson: 1949 Underwood Champion Serial # G1969559 My first typewriter. Purchased at an estate sale on Meridian Street in Indianapolis in the Autumn of 2007, the home of Mr. W. and Mrs. H. Speicher. This Underwood was in their garage and had piles of used backing sheets and carbon paper in the case, dating to the early '70s. The case also bore an address label "The Starost's" on Capitol, Mrs. H.'s parents' house. My mom had heard that the couple left the house in the 1960s, and indeed there was in the house plenty of evidence: old cans of beans, vintage beauty products, etc., though I recently learned that at the time I bought this Underwood both Speichers were living (though have since passed on). Years of grime kept the ribbon from advancing without pressure kept on the ribbon direction rod. Diagnosing the problem (over-active ribbon reversal pawls) did not present a solution, so I took this to Vale-Typerwriter in St. Paul. A thorough cleaning resolved the issue but damaged paint on the keys and the ribbon selection decal. As a result of the product I used to repaint the keys, this typewriter smells both of machine oil and crayon wax, which brings me great joy.
