1946 Underwood SS Serial # 11-6044377 1946 Underwood SS typewriter, Serial # 11-6044377 Brent Wegher's 1946 Underwood SS typewriter. 2025-10-26 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brent Wegher: 1946 Underwood SS Serial # 11-6044377 Local auction. No other info available.
The return lever was bent slightly. This part is chromed steel, so was able to carefully correct the bend.
The ribbon in the right spool was twisted and had locked up the advance.
Otherwise, generally good condition, no other repairs needed, just dusting and remoing gummy dirt from segment and top of carriage.
12 pitch Elite typeface "DE" cast on slugs. Slugs were very clean.
Platen and rollers hard but smooth, very little wear. Paper feeds well.
Measured exact width of rubber on platen closer to 10 3/4 inches instead of 11
The margin rack, set levers and bell working very well. Now all keys work smoothly.
Margin release and backspace work perfectly.
Not sure if the touch control is working, maybe give it some exercise.
The paint on the space bar has some spotty or rough look, maybe factory defect, Not bad.
The rest of the paint and finish is fine, some scuffs, tiny specks, and looks to have been exposted to direct sunlight for some time.
Just could use a fresh ribbon, but typeface sample uses the ribbon that came with the machine.
Basket shift, does the "SS" stand for Segment Shift?
Added photos, some with panels removed to show internals, type bars, etc.
Can't find anything wrong now. Lucky find.

Retired to the quiet of rural Nebraska to contemplate nature.
Typing down thoughts, prefer that to handwriting.
Not really a collector, just like to tinker on mechanical things.
