1946 Underwood Noiseless 77 Serial # 1510196 1946 Underwood Noiseless 77 typewriter, Serial # 1510196 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1946 Underwood Noiseless 77 typewriter. 2026-06-22 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1946 Underwood Noiseless 77 Serial # 1510196 Today we have an Underwood Noiseless 77.

These are Underwood-branded versions of the Remington Noiseless 7 portable.

Initially I was concerned that it was going to be another typewriter wrecked by poor packing. However, it seems to have survived. I had to reconnect the ribbon vibrator linkage that had somehow gotten disconnected. The carriage lock latch had gotten bent to the point of not working - this took some time to bend back into place. Once I took care of these problems, it seems to be working properly.

It has the same "thunk" sound that the full-sized Noiseless I have. Although it's a different mechanism, they share the fact that there is no direct linkage when the type element hits the platen. I believe in the portable Noiseless, there's a swinging weight that provides the momentum for the impression. There is no direct metal-on-metal strike of the typebar into the anvil, so there is no sharp report of the impact.

Another interesting detail is the tiny bell. It is very quiet, which makes sense given the purpose of being a quiet typewriter.

This was another Goodwill acquisition. This was sent from Washington state.

The 6 seems to denote Union UT 18 Remington Pica, which is 10 cpi. Remington sounds weird, until you realize these are just re-badged Remingtons.

The case mounting system seems identical to the Remington portables of similar vintage.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
