Description:
A Remington Noiseless 10.
Unlike my other one which was built in 1937, this one is post WWII. When I went to pick it up, I was sad to learn that the ribbon cover was cracked. Then I was rather surprised that the ribbon cover was plastic. The 1937 is metal, but on this 1946 model, it is made of plastic. Otherwise, it seems mostly the same as the 1937 model. The branding is different, as this one is branded "Remington Rand", while the older one is just "Remington". Also, this model is in elite typeface, and has a British Pound symbol rather than an asterisk. The left side paper guide is painted black, instead of shiny chrome . Otherwise, it seems much the same.
Unfortunately, the cracked ribbon cover is not the only fault. A few of the keys' linkages seem to have come loose, so about 3 of the letter-pairs do not work. So I only have a partial type sample.
I had driven into Newark, NJ to pick this up. Initially, I was going to pass on it as it was broken, but the gentleman selling was operating an artists' space/gallery/museum to Newark. He had quite a nice setup, even though he was still in the process of preparing for the next showing. There were quite a few rescued architectural elements from businesses that had been active in Newark.
He said that the typewriter had come out of an office connected to the Proctor's Theater, which was shut down in 1968.
I'm not quite motivated enough to take it apart to get at the loosened linkages, so I put the intact rubber back-bumpers from this and put it on my 1937 model, which is now nearly perfect.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...
I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Noiseless 10 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Noiseless 10 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
