1939 Remington Remette Serial # CCR22736 1939 Remington Remette typewriter, Serial # CCR22736 Julian Zadorozny's 1939 Remington Remette typewriter. 2023-01-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Julian Zadorozny: 1939 Remington Remette Serial # CCR22736 During the summer of 2022 my twin brother mentioned the existence of an antique shop called Rideau Antiques in Lombardy, Ontario. Not so much of a shop but a refashioned house full of clothes, hats, pins, plates, silverware, just basically the curios of history. A barn on the property held a ceiling full of chairs. The front yard full of stacked buckets high and rusted with prices stickered to each handle.

On a whim I asked the storekeeper if he sold any typewriters. I was led upstairs of what looked like a stable. Through the dark sat four typewriters all priced at $45. The Remington was wrapped in cellophane with no lid. Carrying the typer into the daylight I saw its dark crinkled paint. My cell phone informed me this Remington was built at the end of the depression. I paid for the typewriter without seeing if all the typebars worked.

This Canadian 1939 Remington Remette is a pretty good typewriter. I knew I needed it to be refurbished. Two weeks of soaking the rust off this eighty-three-year-old machine had it working quite well. The carriage return lever does not snap back. An upside-down E key was turned back to its original position. Both margins still slide. There is no paper bail or support arms available for this bare bone's typewriter. No left, just one right platen knob pushes in and out to help the lid lock tight. Typing on this super portable is good for an hour. Not built for long term work.

I do believe this Remette is a beautiful typewriter. There is great enjoyment typing on a machine with such history.

I purchased my first typewriter in 2000: Brother Pro-Line 707 built in 1969.
I wrote eight hours a day, seven days a week on that tiny machine. I wrote my first unpublished novel and hundreds of short stories on the Brother.
In 2020 I decided to purchase my second typewriter. At ten and counting, I still use and collect these amazing tools for writing.
