Description:
The Underwood Portable 4 bank is my 23rd and most recently purchased typewriter and is the first one to be uploaded to the Typewriter Database. I purchased it in a flee market in the city of Norwich, Norfolk, UK for the princely sum of £35 in May '26. Once I had applied some lubricant to the keys and ribbon mechanism, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the machine was in full working order. In fact the print sample you see here was typed using the same ribbon that was present when I purchased it. The machine types really nicely although it doesn't like typing in red so much, some more lubrication needed I think. I love the pica typeface and uniquely within my collection it possesses a c with a / through it. This is a fairly rare character which is not to be confused with the cent symbol (c with a vertical line) it is a Latin character and represents the sound ts as in cats. It is also used in French as a symbol to represent a biological cell. It is my first Underwood typewriter and already one of my favourites.
