1935 Royal KH Serial # KH12-1770422 1935 Royal KH typewriter, Serial # KH12-1770422 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1935 Royal KH typewriter. 2026-06-16 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1935 Royal KH Serial # KH12-1770422 A Royal KH.

This one seems to have been painted over with gray crinkle paint. They seemed to have painted over the glass windows on the side, including where the Touch Control Scale would have been. It has the Royal label on the paper table, so it seems to have been done professionally. However, any other labels are absent.

There was quite a bit of rust which came off with a Scotch brite pad.

Overall, it's an interesting contrast to my 1941 KMM. On the KH, the tab set is on the keyboard, but the tab clear is done by pulling on a tab on the top/back of the typewriter. Clearly this was eventually moved to the front in future models.

The ribbon covers are on spring-loaded turret covers. This makes it so that the top cover is affixed by screws. So things can fall inside, but it is a pain to get inside to either clean it or do any sort of maintenance. So by the time I opened the lid, there was a dust bunny with eraser dust mixed in.

Once I got it cleaned up, it seems to work fine.

This was acquired during my trip to Hazlet. The initial plan was to buy an Olympia SG3 for $40, but it somehow turned into 3 typewriters for $20. This is one of those 3 typewriters.

I think the panel is glass, but it has been painted over. It also seems to have been cracked and repaired.

There should be the Touch Control Scale in that window on this side, but when they painted this, they painted the panel over for some reason.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal KH on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal KH By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
