Description:
2026-03-21 Gallery Creation. I found this Remington 3B on eBay a couple weeks ago, with a "Buy It Now" option at $299. I figured it was a fair price for a scarce machine, so I hit "Buy It Now" on 3/8/26, and now I have made my first typewriter purchase on eBay since my Olivetti-Underwood Studio 44 (#458932) on 1/5/2008. Shipping was $34.05 from Kansas City, MO, so my total came to $333.05. I have done nothing with the machine yet, in terms of cleaning and repairs, but I was able to make a typing sample with the ribbon that it already had installed. The machine appears to be in very good shape for its age.
One major bonus was the sticker on the case, an unexpected rarity. That is a sticker for Storer College, located in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Storer College had its origins in 1865, was founded in 1869, and was considered one of the early historically-black colleges in the US (though it also admitted white students). It went out of business way back in 1955, and now the site and remaining buildings are part the Harpers Ferry National Park.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008. I still have my collection of around 57 machines, and now I have a renewed interest in getting some of them in good working and cosmetic order.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington 3B on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington 3B By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
