Description:
No. 10 in my collection is the Remington Portable Model 5. It is currently the oldest typewriter in my collection. One of the rollers has a bit of a flat spot, so the paper doesn't feed great, and the label on the right shift button has gone all crooked. Otherwise, in good functional condition, with a case in good condition.
You can tell the fact that this is an older model, as the carriage return lever is shorter and less convenient to use, and the line feed and carriage return feels like two separate procedures rather than the smooth single action that more modern typewriters have. The case bottom screws into the frame, and there seems to be some system where a rod is depressed by the lid which locks the carriage. I am unsure if it is working.
This was acquired from another collector off of Facebook Marketplace. I got to meet Alan T., who had started collecting a few years ago. Interestingly, he is a retired typewriter repair technician, and had not collected typewriters during his work. Coincidentally he used to work pretty close to where I live currently, and he now lives about one and a half hours away. He has quite a few other interesting machines, and this was one of the two machines I bought off of him. I suspect I will be buying more from him in the future.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.
Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
