1934 Remington Noiseless Portable Serial # N51957 1934 Remington Noiseless Portable typewriter, Serial # N51957 Mark Schrad's 1934 Remington Noiseless Portable typewriter. 2023-08-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mark Schrad: 1934 Remington Noiseless Portable Serial # N51957 Here’s a gorgeous 1934 Remington Noiseless Portable typewriter. It looks fantastic! It types… well… not fantastic (which is reflected in the price). Makes a wonderful display piece of home decor!

Mechanically, it operates quite well, aside from one rather glaring flaw:

Upon disassembly for cleaning and servicing, it became clear that the fold-down carriage-return lever which SHOULD advance to the next line was not advancing to the next line. The culprit—as shown in the pictures—is that there is a super-tiny wire spring within the line advancement pawl that has become tucked inside (circled). Without that tiny spring doing it’s job, the pawl is not pressed against the platen ratchet, and therefore does not advance the platen to the next line.

As a work-around, you can just advance to the next line manually with the carriage knobs. With a new ribbon installed, it still delivers type, as you can see with the type sample… but it is certainly not the kind of machine that you’d want to use for extended writing sessions.

Formerly of the Bob Aubert collection of Delran, NJ (July 2023).
