1931 Corona 4 Serial # J1B04719 1931 Corona 4 typewriter, Serial # J1B04719 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1931 Corona 4 typewriter. 2026-10-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1931 Corona 4 Serial # J1B04719 A Corona 4

I need to stop my pattern of getting mutiples of the same model, mainly because the first few I get are not working.

This one is working, and in fair cosmetic shape, with the "J" paint pattern, which is black with gold crinkle panels. Corona 4 serial numbers get kind of confusing, and not as 'serial' as other serial numbers.

This one has an intermittent fault where sometimes the keypress interferes with the carriage shift, causing it to shift. I suspect something is bent and interfering.

The rear feet are in good shape, but the front were flattened, so I have replace those.

Otherwise, in pretty good shape, and working when the shift-interference isn't happening.

I thought the case was rather interesting. Unlike most of the cases you see, this one seems to work backwards - the 'lid' is actually the shorter piece, and the hardware for holding the typewriter steady is found in the deeper part of the case. Also, the lid doesn't disconnect from the case, as you obviously can't operate the typewriter as it sits in the deeper part of the case. It's stock, as it has the Corona logo on the inside, along with what I assume is a monogram of the previous owner's initials.

I often wonder how many choices of cases there were at any one time for a particular model of typewriter.

The oddball case, where the thinner 'lid' is actually the lid. Note the metal plate to hold down the carriage return lever, and the Corona branding. The deeper bottom has the hardware to affix the typewriter - you hook the front under a metal tab, and the rear brackets hold the rear frame in position, and a pad on the lid holds the platen down.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Corona 4 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Corona Serial Number page and the Corona 4 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
