Purchased in a Virginia antique mall for about $20 in 2025. These were made from 1924-1932. This one seems to be in working order but needs ink. There are several US patent numbers printed on the dial, along with patent numbers for Germany, Britain, and France.

The Simplex 200 is shown here with another toy tin dial typewriter in my collection, the Berwin "Superior" typewriter. While the Simplex 200 was made from 1924-1932, the Berwin "Superior" was made in the 50's by Ellcraft Industires, Inc. which was based in NY and NJ. The Berwin features a more substantial roller for the paper and a punch button for stamping the characters.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). The tactile nature of typing on a manual machine works some kind of detox magic in this digital age. Each vintage typewriter has a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
