Description:
My absolutely stunning 1929 Remington Portable No.2 with a Pica typeface, fondly nicknamed 'Bess'. She is probably my favourite machine in my collection and is even my daily in college! When I got my hands on her, she was a little dirtier, had a black ribbon and a broken drawstring. I managed to repair the drawstring with Kevlar line and she worked like magic. A new bichrome ribbon and a good clean later? Good as new (almost)!
Bess still has a few minor teething issues I am yet to address. The circumflex accent exclusively prints in red, some letters have red bases occasionally and characters sometimes occasionally merge. In addition, the paper bail is slightly bent which causes the type slugs to get stuck under the right roller, hence why I don't use it. Besides these, she functions impeccably and is really enjoyable to use.
Fun fact - Bess uses spools from my 1924 Remington Portable No.1, serial NL44586, as that is currently out of action and I decided to swap the spools for the No.1's pair as I'd already given it a new ribbon , which was going to waste sat on an inactive machine. Rather than get tangled up in ribbon attempting to put it onto Bess' spools, I just swapped them. Bess' potentially original spools are now on NL44586.

Hey there! I'm an amateur typewriter enthusiast often found wearing a flatcap. I currently own 6 machines and am still learning the ropes when it comes to a lot of areas. As a child, I had a fascination with these wonderful machines and owned two when I was around 8-10. One of which was a Petite toy typewriter. In October of 2025, many years later and having lost access to both of my old machines, my (at the time) backburner interest was reignited after finding an almost immaculate 196x Olympia Traveller in a charity shop. Smudger, as I like to call her, was the tipping point back into my interest, and as a result, I now own 6 of these fantastic things.
Thanks for reading!
