Description:

I obtained this in Sydney 2026-08 from the original owners family. The man who purchased it worked in the train maintenance industry in the Parramatta area. I have annotated some of the images with some interesting details, so check those out.
I have noted the following issues with this machine --
1. Paper bail rollers melted and stopped paper advancing (fixed : replaced rubber with new).
2. Ribbon advance very siezed, particularly on the right (fixed? Using degreaser on right and working in oil afterwards, now does move and advance).
3. Backspace does not reliably go back (adjusted : this is slightly tricky. If you adjust the key too far it locks up the carriage. It is better, but still it helps to push the carriage as you backspace).
4. Very dirty all over (fixed : cleaned).
5. “M.R.” key linkage broken and non-functional. This looks hard to fix. For now, I have 3D printed a piece to support the key and stop it from moving around as you type.
6. Margin lock does not stop key from striking. (work around – set right margin very wide).
7. Tabs do not return to position after being pressed and are generally a bit dicky, can lock up carriage.
8. Decimal setting on right for tabs feels broken. I think this was ok when I got it?
9. Occasional skipping. Particularly from the A key and near the left margin.
10. F key can get stuck on linkage of the first tab. (fixed : Formed slightly and now it seems to be ok.).
11. Most keys were sticky and would not return (fixed other than the 5/8 7/8 which is still pretty bad. I don’t really care about that one).
12. Roller rubber stuck on platen. (Fixed : carefully scraped this off. It can still be seen but is now smooth).
13. Some spot rust (partly fixed – treated with Rustbuster. Notable is the left shift lock key surround ring).
14. Some chrome worn off, paint chipped.
15. Tops of letters sometimes faint/missing. I think this might be related to the issue of the tense ribbon spools.

I have 3D printed a support piece for the "M.R." (Margin Release) key, as it flops about otherwise.

Right hand side SHIFT-LOCK!

Paint cracked on the spacebar down to the metal, which is what it is made of (not wood).

Newly replaced rubber rollers on paper bail. Paper table logo is in fairly good condition for almost 100 years old!

Later models, like the 19, have a control where that hole is on the side.

The left knob area still has some chrome bits that are nice and shiny. The return lever is mostly not any more though.

Not sure what foundy these slugs came from. The logo looks like a hand holding a trident?

The very broken linkage for the margin release key. Not sure what I am going to do about that.

The spools have a slightly unusual spindle hole which is not round, and a lever that swings out when you get to the end and pull on the ribbon. In otherwords, don't lose these spools as they unique and are required for this machine to auto-reverse! I don't believe there was a cover for these, but I could be wrong about that.
