Description:
2026-JUN-28, Original Gallery Creation. I did a search on "Oliver typewriter" on eBay this morning, sorted by New Listing first, and got 326 hits. Of these, 63 listings were for actual 3-bank Oliver machines, as follows:
No Model 1/2 machines, not surprisingly.
Six (6) Model 3's.
Twenty-four (24) Model 5's, including one wide-carriage (18") example. Of these, 2/24 were Printypes, and 16/24 had a tabulator key. The latest S/N provided for a no-tabulator machine was #196738. The earliest clear S/N with a tabulator was #301859.
One (1) Model 7.
One (1) Model 8.
Thirty-one (31) Model 9's. Of these, 20 were Printypes (about 2/3).
No Model 11's or any other model of 3-bank.
There is one Model 20 listing, based in France.
The subject of this gallery, #942174, is one of the nicer-looking Model 9's listed, plus the listing has good-quality photos. I took the serial number off the rear-carriage rail. Only one listing (for a Model 9, #703849) showed an image of the serial number on the frame riser. Following is a list of the serial numbers (where they could be read clearly) for the Model 3's, 5's, 7's, 8's, and 9's today. The one Model 7 and the one Model 8 already have separate galleries that I posted last weekend (see links).
Model 3 S/N's: 43815 (marginal image), 54822, 105158, 117601
Model 5 S/Ns: 186277, 196738, 301859, 322681, 433195
Model 7 S/N: 501059
Model 8 S/N: D31468
Model 9 S/Ns: 703849, 735256, 789573, 924773, 942174, A991563

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008.
In late 2024, I started up again, working on my machines and having some of them serviced professionally by New England Typewriter (NET) LLC (Merrimack, NH), until they closed their doors in December of 2025. Since mid-2025, I have been adding to my collection again, first with a Hermes 3000 purchase from NET, then with various auctions and purchases on eBay, when I find something that catches my eye.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Oliver 9 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Oliver Serial Number page and the Oliver 9 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
