1919 Corona 3 Serial # 249920 1919 Corona 3 typewriter, Serial # 249920 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1919 Corona 3 typewriter. 2026-10-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1919 Corona 3 Serial # 249920 A Corona 3.

I received this one along with a Corona 4. I was interested more in the 4, but both were very, very rusty. Everything was rusted to the point of being stuck. In this very rough case, I used WD-40 just to dislodge the rust. Eventually, I got things to at least move. The original carriage strap was broken, but both ends were still there. Somewhat interestingly, it seems to have been made of gut. Which makes sense given the age.

The spring that resets the ribbon vibrator has rusted away, so for this to have a chance of operating correctly, I would have to obtain replacement springs. It seems like McMaster Carr seems to sell all sorts of springs, so if I ever get motivated to get this functional, I'll start by buying replacement springs.

Another fault I see is that the FIG shift and CAP shift both shift to the capital letter height. I think I know where the adjustment is for that, but I've stopped messing with it.

It did give up it's left side paper finger to another Corona 3, which was missing it, but was in functioning condition.

I believe the set screws on the bottom of the picture adjust the shift height.

This looks even rustier in person. The bell looks better because I have polished it. The problem is that the parts all seem to be nickel-plated, and the corrosion has caused the plating to peel. The bell is after the nickel plating has been sanded off, and I have sanded and polished the metal underneath. Also, note the missing spring for the ribbon vibrator, which should be affixed to the ribbon color selector switch.

The remains of what I assume is the original carriage strap. It seems to be gut string, which makes sense given the age of the typewriter.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Corona 3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Corona Serial Number page and the Corona 3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
