Description:
1-31-2026 Update. I cleaned the segment and typebars to resolve the sticky keys. Now it types much better. I re-did the typing sample and the set of images, adding quite a few. This was motivated by noticing that (1) there is a matching serial number underneath on the frame, which I did not realize before; (2) I wanted to show the foundry marks on the typebars - the marks are a numeral "1", indicating pica typeface; (3) I discovered that the typebars are numbered sequentially from left to right in the basket.
11-16-2025 Gallery Creation. I acquired this early, B-series, Woodstock Model 5 on eBay on 24 September 2006. The cost to me with shipping was $47.96. I had the platen and rollers re-surfaced by Ames Supply Co. in December of 2007. I also installed four new replacement feet. Otherwise, it has not been serviced and has a number of sticky keys. One curiosity is the Margin Release control is labeled "LINE-LOCK RELEASE". I have another Woodstock Model 5, S/N BW-40431, which has the same key labeled "MARGIN RELEASE". I estimate the year of manufacture for the latter one to be about 1919, so the change-over from "LINE-LOCK RELEASE" to "MARGIN RELEASE" apparently happened in the 1918-1919 time frame.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008. I still have my collection of around 57 machines, and now I have a renewed interest in getting some of them in good working and cosmetic order.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Woodstock 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Woodstock Serial Number page and the Woodstock 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
